Storyboard for animation
The learning context for this storyboard is developing a learning pathway for high school biology students.
By the end of this pathway, students will be able to:
1. Distinguish between the two forms of cell division: mitosis and
meiosis.
2. Describe the mitotic and meiotic cell cycles.
3. Identify the different phases of mitosis using key laboratory
techniques.
The animated storyboard responds to the second learning objective and follows from a poster comparing the taxonomy of cell division in terms of the commonalities and differences between mitosis and meiosis. The animation was selected as the best strategy for meeting LO2 since cell division is an active living process. Animating the phases of the mitotic and meiotic cell cycles drives this point home. Following animated diagrams with explanations also prepares students for the next activity: a laboratory simulation. In the simulation, students will need to be able to recognise the phases of mitosis as they unfold in actual cells. This animation will help them know what to look for.
